The Unicorn Movement is about choosing to unlearn what hustle culture has conditioned us to believe about success—normalizing survival mode, constant stress, self-sacrifice, and ignoring our bodies—and instead, leading by example in setting a new standard where a mind body approach to well-being and putting your oxygen mask on first are the foundation of sustainable success in vet med and beyond.

Success shouldn't have to cost you your well-being.

The Unicorn Movement is about breaking the norm - not just in workplaces, but in how we live, lead, and thrive.

It starts with the individual: When we prioritize our well-being, we create a positive ripple effect in our lives, our workplaces, and the world.

Being a unicorn isn't something you're born with, it's a choice and way of navigating life.

And when enough of us choose to be unicorns, we shift entire industries toward a healthier, more sustainable future.

What's a unicorn?

Unicorns are the people and companies that stand out because of their magnetic energy and resilience. 

They prioritize well-being, because they know it's a non-negotiable foundation for sustainable success. 

Unicorns see challenges as opportunities to gain new perspectives, think-outside-the-box, and problem solve for a brighter, burnout-resistant future.

The root causes of burnout in vet med are the same issues that are creating a society where the norm is to be unhealthy and unhappy:

  • We’ve normalized (and even select and reward for) the warning signs that we’re living in survival mode (like constant busyness, impossibly high standards, and, self-sacrificing) which isn’t sustainable 
  • In an effort to be "professional" we compartmentalize stress and emotions until it's too much or it manifests as unhealthy habits to numb rather than being taught how to feel, process, and release uncomfortable emotions so they don't weigh you down 
  • We treat physical and mental health like they’re separate - they’re not. How can you possibly solve a puzzle if you’re only looking at one of the pieces?
  • We self-sacrifice basic necessities (like bathroom breaks, pausing for a nourishing lunch, water, movement, and fresh air) when we're "too busy" or unless we've “earned” it instead of treating them like a critical foundation for our bodies and brains to function. Physiological safety is just as important as psychological safety from the body's perspective.

Unicorns speak to themselves and others in a way that uplifts and unites rather than getting caught up in polarization, judgment, blame, and comparison-itis. They appreciate the success of others while having confidence in their own unique beauty, strengths, and timeline.

✨ N - Nervous System Regulation

Unicorns know that seeing life through a nervous system lens is a superpower. It's a universal language and yet most people have been conditioned to unlearn it. Recognizing regulation and dysregulation in yourself and others helps to navigate interactions proactively rather than reactively.

I - Inner Compass

Unicorns have a confidence that comes from within because they trust themselves and their inner wisdom. Instead of relying on external validation or shoulds, they listen to their bodies and values to make aligned choices.

✨ C - Curiosity with Compassion + Connection

Unicorns replace judgment with curiosity and compassion and recognize how everything is connected, so that challenges lead to growth and problem-solving.

 O - Objective vs. Subjective Thinking

 Unicorns recognize and challenge their own biases and limiting beliefs, avoiding emotional spirals or dead-ends because of assumptions or blind spots.

 Unicorns know that resilience isn’t about toughing it out—it’s about respecting and supporting your mind and body so you can bounce back after hard days and challenges.

✨ N - Breaks the Norm

Unicorns know that in order to thrive, you can't do what everyone else is doing. They have the courage to think-outside-the-box and lead by example in doing things differently.
