I did everything “right”—working hard, following the rules, and striving for success as a veterinarian. I was proud of my ability to do it all. I also normalized the constant stress, brain fog, stomach pain, and exhaustion.

  • We’ve normalized and rewarded the warning signs of survival mode—constant busyness, impossibly high standards, and self-sacrifice—without realizing they’re unsustainable.
  •  In an effort to be “professional,” we compartmentalize stress and emotions until they overwhelm us, instead of learning to process and release them.
  • We act as if mental and physical health are separate—but they’re completely intertwined. You can’t solve a puzzle by looking at only one piece.
  • We deny ourselves basic necessities (bathroom breaks, meals, fresh air, hydration, movement) unless we’ve “earned” them—when in reality, these are foundational to performing at our best. Physiological safety is just as important as psychological safety!
